A new study just dropped.

Approximately 2.8% of Americans age 12 and older—roughly 8 million people—reported using psilocybin within the past year.

8 million.

This is based on data from the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, marking the first time the large-scale survey included psilocybin-specific questions.

For context: Rates of psilocybin use increased 44% among adults ages 18-29 from 2019 to 2023, and 188% among those over age 30.

Something’s shifting. And it’s happening fast.

Young adults ages 18 to 25 were more likely to use psilocybin compared to middle-aged adults.

But here’s what’s interesting:

People who experienced a major depressive episode in the past year were significantly more likely to seek out the drug.

This isn’t just recreational curiosity. People are turning to psilocybin for relief.

Researchers say studies have shown psilocybin can be a powerful tool for treating depression, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has marked it as a breakthrough therapy for treatment-resistant and major depression.

Five years ago, talking about psilocybin as medicine would get you dismissed.

Now

“Prior surveys only captured lifetime use, which tells us little about current use patterns; someone who tried psilocybin once in college a decade ago and someone using it regularly today look identical in that data,” said first author Dr. Kevin Yang. “Past-year gives us a much more clinically relevant picture of who is using psilocybin right now.”

The conversation has fundamentally changed.

Researchers said it is vital for doctors to start having open, non-judgmental conversations with their patients about it.

Understanding why patients are using it can help doctors provide better advice on harm reduction and monitor patients for dangerous drug interactions.

Because people aren’t waiting for permission anymore.

They’re microdosing for focus. For anxiety. For depression. For PTSD.

They’re self-medicating when traditional treatments haven’t worked.

And they’re finding relief.

In many ways, the growing scientific and public interest in psilocybin mirrors the early days of recreational cannabis legalization in the U.S.

But there’s a difference.

Cannabis was legalized state by state over decades. Psilocybin’s trajectory is moving faster.

A study published in early 2026 found that about 11 million adults in the United States used psilocybin in the previous year.

Wait—8 million or 11 million?

Both. Different studies, different methodologies. The point is: the numbers are massive. And growing.

For 50+ years, psilocybin was classified as having "no medical use."

Now, 8 million Americans are using it. The FDA is fast-tracking it.

Research institutions are studying it. States are legalizing it.

The stigma is collapsing in real time.

And here’s what’s beautiful:

The mushrooms haven’t changed. We have.

They’ve been growing from the earth for millions of years. Offering healing. Offering connection. Offering perspective.

We’re just finally ready to listen.

8 million people.

That’s not a fringe movement. That’s not a trend.

That’s a quiet revolution.

And it’s happening because people are sharing their stories.

Researchers are publishing data. Veterans are speaking up. Policies are shifting.

The earth has been offering these medicines for millennia.

Indigenous communities have known their power for thousands of years.

And now, finally, the rest of us are catching up.

The mushrooms were always here.

We’re just now ready to see them.
